The Hiawatha Sportsman's Club was founded in 1927 by William E. McNamara and his colleagues. They purchased 25,000 acres of land in Michigan that had been logged and abandoned. The club's first buildings were named in honor of the land's original inhabitants, the Ojibwa Indians. 1927: The Hiawatha Sportsman's Club (HSC) was established and purchased 25,000 acres. Cranberry Lodge was built. 1931: Manitou Lodge and Mudjekeewis Dining Hall were constructed. Expansion: The club later added a golf course, cabins, an iconic entrance, and other facilities. Repurposed buildings: Manitou Lodge was converted into a museum and the commissary became the Paintin' Place. Growth: The club has grown to include over 10,000 more acres. Today, the HSC is Michigan's largest private club, featuring five miles of Lake Michigan frontage and over 100 miles of trails. As it approaches its centennial in 2027, its mission remains to preserve the wilderness and maintain its natural resources.
